A gunman opened fire inside a New York City hospital on Friday (June 30) in a burst of violence that injured several people and left the suspect dead, police said.
“It’s an isolated incident. It appears to be workplace-related matter,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio during a news conference after visiting the hospital.
NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill added, “During the incident, the hospital’s fire alarm system activated, apparently due to the suspect’s attempt to set himself on fire.”
O’Neill said the suspect died from “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound” and that an assault rifle was found nearby. The police chief said one female was killed and six other people were wounded.
“The subject is not being officially identified at this time. He is a former employee of Bronx-Lebanon Hospital,” O’Neill added.
A Facebook video shared by Gilbert Perez, shows police running toward the hospital during the ordeal.
